Singapore

3 governments, 3 different opinions

🇯🇵

Japan (MOFA)

Level 1

No advisory issued (low risk)

Japan's MOFA issues no specific danger advisory for Singapore. It is one of the safest destinations in Asia, with very low violent crime.

United States (State Dept)

Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions

🇬🇧

United Kingdom (FCDO)

See our advice before travelling

The FCDO highlights Singapore's strict laws rather than safety risks: severe penalties for drug offences (including the death penalty for trafficking) and bans on vaping and chewing-gum imports. Crime levels are low.

strict drug lawsdeath penalty for traffickingvaping banchewing gum import banheavy fines for minor offences

All three governments broadly agree on the risk level.

All three governments rate Singapore as very safe (Japan: no advisory; US: Level 1; UK: low crime). The real gap is not danger but law: Singapore enforces some of the strictest rules in the world. Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death penalty, vaping is entirely banned (possession is fined), and importing chewing gum for sale is illegal. Japanese travelers, reassured by the "safe advanced country" image, are most at risk of unknowingly breaking these laws.

E-cigarettes and vaping devices — banned to import, possess, or use. On-the-spot fine ~S$700; devices confiscated.

Chewing gum — importing for sale is illegal (therapeutic/nicotine gum from a pharmacist is exempt).

Controlled drugs — trafficking above set thresholds carries a mandatory death penalty (e.g. 15g heroin, 500g cannabis, 250g methamphetamine).

Tobacco is NOT duty-free — all cigarettes are taxable and must be declared on arrival.

Cash or bearer instruments exceeding S$20,000 must be declared.

Export Restrictions

Endangered-species products (ivory, certain corals) — prohibited under CITES.

No significant export restrictions for ordinary tourist purchases.

Customs rules can change. Always verify with the local customs authority or embassy before travelling. See Japan return customs guide

SAFE-SENTINEL Tips

💡 Based on all 3 sources:

  1. 1.Do NOT bring e-cigarettes or vapes — possession alone is fined (~S$700) and devices are confiscated.
  2. 2.Never carry anything for others; drug trafficking above set thresholds carries a mandatory death penalty.
  3. 3.Don't import chewing gum to sell (therapeutic/nicotine gum from a pharmacist is the only exception).
  4. 4.Don't eat or drink on the MRT, jaywalk, litter, or smoke outside designated areas — all carry on-the-spot fines.
  5. 5.Tap water is safe to drink; healthcare is excellent but expensive — get travel insurance.
  6. 6.Use the MRT and Grab; the city is extremely walkable and safe at night.
  7. 7.Fire and ambulance is 995, police is 999.
