Taiwan
3 governments, 3 different opinions
Japan (MOFA)
Japan's MOFA currently issues no advisory for this country.
No advisory issued
MOFA issues no advisory for Taiwan. Its safety briefing does note that police statistics for 2024 recorded 384,877 criminal offences — a per-capita rate about 2.8 times Japan's — and that traffic rules and driving manners are observed less consistently than in Japan.
United States (State Dept)
Level 1
Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions
Exercise normal precautions in Taiwan. Reissued 25 November 2025 with no changes to the advisory level or risk indicators.
United Kingdom (FCDO)
No advice against travel anywhere in Taiwan. States that crime rates are extremely low. Updated 7 August 2026. Focuses on typhoons and earthquakes, pointing travellers to the Taiwanese authorities' sites for road, school and office closures, and notes that drug laws are stricter than in the UK, including for cannabis.
All three governments place Taiwan at the mildest end: no advisory from Japan, normal precautions from the US, and no UK restriction anywhere in the country. What is worth reading is where they point next, because they point in opposite directions. The UK states plainly that crime rates are extremely low. MOFA, comparing against Japan rather than Britain, notes that the 2024 per-capita rate of recorded offences was about 2.8 times Japan's and asks travellers to stay alert. Both are true — they are simply using different yardsticks, and a traveller from Japan should read Japan's. Beyond that the practical content is environmental: the UK is the one that tells you where to check for typhoon and earthquake closures, which matters because typhoon season overlaps the Japanese summer holidays. MOFA is the one that flags how differently traffic behaves.

💡 Based on all 3 sources:
- 1.Typhoon season overlaps the Japanese summer holidays — check closures on the Taiwanese authorities' sites the UK links to before moving between cities.
- 2.Carry ID; the UK notes you should have your passport or a printed copy of the photo page.
- 3.Traffic does not behave as it does in Japan. MOFA specifically flags this — take care crossing and on scooters.
- 4.Drug laws are strict, cannabis included, regardless of what is legal where you came from.
- 5.Police 110, fire and ambulance 119. The foreign affairs police line 02-2556-6007 has English support 24 hours.
