United Kingdom (FCDO)

See our advice before travelling

Japan rates Thailand as Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions), while the US rates it Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution). This 1-level gap reflects the US giving greater weight to civil unrest in southern border provinces. The UK does not use numeric levels but specifically warns about drink spiking, gem scams, and road safety — risks not prominently featured in Japan's advisory.

SAFE-SENTINEL Tips

💡 Based on all 3 sources:

  1. 1.Use Grab or Bolt instead of street taxis — fixed pricing eliminates meter scam risk
  2. 2.Keep valuables in your hotel safe. Carry only what you need for the day
  3. 3.Never accept drinks from strangers, and don't leave your drink unattended in bars
  4. 4.Bangkok and major tourist areas are generally safe. Avoid the southern border provinces entirely
  5. 5.Get travel insurance — medical costs can be extremely high without it
  6. 6.Be skeptical of anyone offering 'special deals' on gems, suits, or tours near temples
  7. 7.Download offline maps before arriving. Mobile data via eSIM is recommended
